In Fall 2024, the Alberta government tabled legislation prohibiting the delivery of gender-affirming care to minors. Children’s Healthcare Canada strongly opposes any legislation that interferes with the autonomy of licensed physicians to make healthcare decisions in close collaboration with patients and their families. In addition to concerns compromising the patient-provider relationship, this legislation will most certainly negatively impact the physical, mental and sexual health of children and youth in the province.
During our 2025 Conference, Right-Sizing Health Systems for Kids: Creating the Future Together, we brought together child health advocates, political experts, and advocacy champions to explore how to effectively position children’s health as a national policy priority. One particular session, What Unites Us: Prioritizing the Health of Kids in Canada focused on practical strategies to elevate children’s health in the federal government’s policy agenda.
As the federal election centers around discussions on Canada's economy and future, the critical question remains: How can we build a prosperous and resilient Canada tomorrow if we do not prioritize the health and wellbeing of our children today?
As the year draws to a close, Children's Healthcare Canada is reflecting on opportunities to improve experiences and outcomes of healthcare for children and youth in Canada.
